How to Guide: Roulette

Once referred to as the Devil’s Wheel, Roulette has long since been a firm favourite amongst casino fans. With its simple gameplay and reliance on chance, it’s no wonder that this game has stood the test of time.

It’s believed that the first form of Roulette was created in the 18th century, however the main mechanism that allows the wheel to spin was actually invented in the previous century, thanks to mathematician and physicist, Blaise Pascal. Pascal set out to invent the very first perpetual motion machine, but instead wound up creating what is now considered to be a primitive form of the iconic Roulette wheel.

The Roulette that we know and love today is also said to have gained inspiration from the Italian game Biribi. The premise for this game was extremely simple – with a board filled with numbered squares and the option to place bets on the outcome, the dealer would then pull out a randomly selected ticket, calling out the number. The player who backed the corresponding numbered square is then declared the winner. Whilst this is also an extremely similar concept to bingo, it bears similarities to Roulette, since the main aim of this game being to hedge your bets on the numbered outcomes as well.

With such a rich history, it’s no wonder that so many of the players who flock to play casino games at griffoncasino.com decide upon Roulette as their game of choice. Want to get in on the action? Read on to find out more about how to get involved.

The basics

Roulette can be found in almost every casino – both brick-and-mortar and online. All versions will consist of a detailed gaming table, and the aforementioned wheel which is filled with numbered pockets. There’s also a little white ball which will bounce between pockets when the wheel is spun, ultimately revealing the winning number when it settles.

Depending on where you play, you should expect to find a slight variation in the order of the numbers around the wheel. Whilst the European version of the wheel contains one zero pocket, the American Roulette wheel also hosts the double zero, which tends to increase the house edge.

The bets

Despite being such an aesthetically simple game, there’s a wide range of different bets that can be placed during Roulette gameplay, allowing the individual player to decide how elaborate they wish to make the game. If you’re a fairly novice player but wish to dabble in these more exciting bets, then not to worry as the betting table will feature each bet type, no matter where you play.

The types of bets are split into two sections: inside and outside.

Inside bets include:

  • Straight Up: betting on single numbers
  • Split: betting on two adjacent numbers
  • Trio: a three number combination bet that includes a zero
  • Street: a bet that involves a row of three numbers

Whereas, outside bets consist of:

  • Red or Black: bets on either all red pockets or all black pockets
  • Even or Odd: bets on either all even numbers or all odd
  • Dozen: betting on either the first, second or third set of 12 numbers
  • Double Zero: betting on all green zero pockets – if playing with the American version of the wheel.
