Movies that did not get a Theater Release

Small businesses were not the only ones to fall when the pandemic hit badly and shut most of them for an indefinite period, some permanently. Large industries saw a significant downfall when theatres across the world closed their doors for customers in fear of spreading the disease.

The closure of theaters caused a ripple effect for the long list of movies lined up for their release in the year 2020. From January to March and July, we came across numerous films getting delayed hoping for a theatrical release later this year. But that did not happen.

Eventually, production houses chose a somewhat risky method to get their content out to the masses. There was a risk, but the timing was also quite right; it was a confusing state.

A worldwide theatrical release obviously would have been the best thing for the producers and actors in terms of earnings and preventing them from going bankrupt. But the current streaming state intrigued them to take this step.

It won’t be wrong if we dub the year 2020 as the year of streaming services. Since billions of people were hooked on to them since the lockdown and the services saw substantial growth in their subscriber count by millions at a time. To maintain that, they had to put up fresh content on the plate. And producers were desperate to get their movies out.

Of course, some movie makers chose to cancel the 2020 release altogether and further delay it until 2021-2022, like the Avatar sequel and movies from the Star Wars Franchise.

With that, let us dive in and find out which movie, after numerous delays, finally made it to the screens, but that of a streaming service.

Mulan

The most anticipated Disney movie on the block, Mulan struggled to make a theatrical release since March. And after several delays, it finally made it to the new pay-per-view Premier Access of Disney+ on September 4th, 2020. Despite the anticipation, it struggled to cover up even half the overall budget cost, which was $200 million.

None the less, the movie made its debut and was a delight to watch. To enhance the experience, we would recommend watching Mulan on a Smart TV or a big screen as its amazing cinematic views and fight sequence will only do justice on the big screen. Mulan is a beauty to watch, and the story may not be similar to the classic animated version, but it is different and worth watching without any comparisons.

Greyhound

Greyhound, starring Tom Hanks, was a historical war drama where he led an Allied convoy across the Atlantic Ocean during World War II. But with the enemy’s interruption, things take an unexpected turn, which begun The Battle of Atlantic, the most protracted and most complex battle in naval history.

Greyhound was one of the initial big budgeted movies which canceled their theatrical release and premiered on Apple’s streaming service Apple TV+ on July 10th.

Trolls World Tour

Troll’s World Tour became one of the first movies to shift to digital rental release, and it was a total hit. It earned more in its first three weeks than the initial Trolls movie did in 5 months when released in the theater. The film eventually made it to screens in March after numerous delays and shifts in the dates.

Artemis Fowl

Artemis Fowl, and adaptation of a best selling kid’s fantasy movie powered by The Walt Disney Company. Its initial release date was May 29, but looking at the circumstances, it was premiered on Disney’s new streaming service Disney Plus on July 19th.

Sadly the movie struggled on the platform as it did not do much justice to the storyline and was more focused on the visual effects in the futuristic magical adaptation.
